US September 2009 car sales totalled 19,977 units, down 48 percent on the August figure of 38,701 units. The end of the “cash for clunkers” program is being cited as the reason for the market plunge in September. In fact when compared to August figures the overall market plunge for all models, including hybrids was approx 40%.
A point to note however is this – when compared to the September 2008 figure of 20,836 units, the 2009 September hybrid car sales figure is down a mere 4.17 per cent. With the US economy predictions for growth beginning to take shape, the market slide appears to be stabilizing and next month’s figures will be interesting to say the least.
US year to date (YTD) hybrid car sales at the end of September 2009 were 220,623 units compared to the figure of 255,792 units for the same period in 2008.
